Make Halloween Safe not Scary through these Tips and Reminders

Happy Halloween to you and yours. It’s a ghoul-ish time of year that marks Fall, fun and also, a bit of fantasy.

While we are carving out some time for Halloween fun, it’s also a time when we must be vigilant about safety and remain hyper-focused around awareness of the many aspects of the holiday.

No need to go batty, though. We’ve noted some key tips and reminders here to creep you and your family safe and real this Halloween.

For trick-or-treaters, these tips will help keep you on-ghourd and safe:
  • Walk with a friend and/or use a buddy system. Don’t walk alone at night
  • Be aware when crossing the street. Use crosswalks or cross at corners vs. in the middle of the street. Be sure to look for oncoming traffic in all directions.
  • Pay close attention to and follow the rules of the road.
  • Wear flame-resistant costumes that are bright and reflective to be more visible.
  • Don’t let costumes drag to avoid tripping.
  • Wear makeup and hats rather than masks that can hamper vision.
  • Test any makeup you plan to use at least 24-48 hours in advance by putting a small amount on the arm. If a rash, redness, swelling or any signs of irritation surface where the makeup was applied, there could be a possible allergy.
  • Apply vibrantly colored makeup. Check the FDA’s list of color additives to see if the colors are FDA approved. If they aren’t approved, don’t use them. This is especially important for colored makeup around the eyes.
For drivers – don’t pick up an witch-hikers and stay pumped about Halloween safety by:
  • Being aware that there will be more foot traffic on the streets due to trick-or-treaters.
  • Taking it slow and be extra cautious.
  • Scanning the roads carefully.
  • Watching for young trick-or-treaters in unexpected places. Children can easily be unaware of traffic and road rules. They could potentially dart into the street unexpectedly.
  • Reporting a drunk driver you suspect on the road (as always).
And then there’s the actual treats…they are a big part of Halloween. It’s typically love at first bite BUT… before you or your children go trick-or-treating to goblin candy all night long, remember these tips:
  • Inspect candy at home prior to consuming.
  • Eat a snack before heading out to avoid eating treats before they’ve been inspected.
  • Checks labels to prevent allergic reactions for those who may be sensitive.
  • Tell children not to accept — or eat — anything that isn’t commercially wrapped.
  • Inspect commercially wrapped treats for signs of tampering, such as an unusual appearance or discoloration, tiny pinholes, or tears in wrappers. Discard any that look suspicious.
  • Remove any choking hazards in candy for young children such as gum, peanuts, hard candies or small toys.

Bone appétit.
